Skoda Auto has set its sights on doubling its sales in India by 2026, with a strategic move involving the launch of an affordably priced compact Skoda SUV slated for next year. The aim is to ship out approximately 100,000 cars by 2026, a bold target set by a top company official on Tuesday.

Despite the challenges, India remains one of Skoda Auto’s top five global markets and ranks as the third-largest passenger vehicle market globally. CEO Kalus Zellmer emphasized India’s significance as a key contributor to the carmaker’s global growth trajectory.
Under the Skoda Auto Volkswagen Group’s €1 billion India 2.0 strategy, the brand has rolled out two models – Skoda SUV Kushaq and Skoda Sedan Slavia – built on the group’s MQB A0 IN platform. This strategic move underscores the brand’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the Indian market.
Zellmer highlighted the brand’s investment strategy focused on product enhancements and introducing new offerings across both internal combustion engine (ICE) and battery electric options. The aim is to bolster the Skoda brand in India and target a market share of around 5% by 2030.
Market Share and Growth Prospects
Skoda Auto accounted for 1.19% of India’s passenger vehicle market in 2023, with plans to grow its share to 5% by 2030. Industry experts view this target as modest yet realistic, considering the competitive landscape dominated by established players.
Skoda’s newly appointed India brand director, Petr Janeba, anticipates modest growth in 2024, with a brand-new product set to debut in 2025. The introduction of this new offering is expected to double volumes from day one, expanding the brand’s reach and capturing new segments of customers.
Electrification stands as the second pillar of Skoda’s growth plan in India. While there’s currently no business case for a sub-four-meter electric vehicle (EV) in India, the brand aims to introduce its Enyaq EV this year and a large electric 7-seater Skoda SUV in 2026.
