Ford’s Return to India: A Closer Look at Their Latest Patent

Recently, there’s been buzz about Ford Motor Company’s (FMC) comeback to the Indian market, with the company actively recruiting for various positions at its manufacturing plant in Chennai. Adding to the excitement, FMC has filed design patents for the fourth-generation Endeavour, known internationally as the Everest.

Another patent image filed by the American Auto Major has caused a stir online. It appears that this new model is aimed at the compact mid-size SUV market, competing with popular models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota HyRyder, Honda Elevate, and others.

Given the widespread appeal of mid-size SUVs, it’s a smart move for FMC to enter this segment and potentially boost its sales volume. While the Endeavour holds a strong legacy, the full-size premium SUV segment might not yield high sales, especially if it’s imported either as a completely built unit (CBU) or a completely knocked-down (CKD) kit.

Key Features of the Patent Design

The design patent hints at a mid-size SUV assembled locally in Chennai. Notable features include mesh-like inserts on the front grille, accompanied by boomerang-shaped headlights with sleek LED daytime running lights (DRLs) on top. The side profile is characterized by sharp creases, pronounced wheel arches, and black claddings housing multi-spoke alloy wheels. The boxy silhouette is accentuated by a flat roofline and tall pillars. Additional highlights include a trapezoidal secondary air dam, a silver chin, and a contoured bonnet. While some visual cues resemble the Ford Explorer in China, this model appears notably smaller.

It’s important to note that the details mentioned are speculative at this point, and the filing of patents doesn’t guarantee a market launch. However, it does offer insights into FMC’s future direction in India. Alongside this potential mid-size SUV and the fourth-gen Endeavour, FMC is also considering bringing the all-electric Mustang Mach E to India, as it has already been trademarked in the country.
